My Yaoi, Shonen ai, Boys love Slashable anime list

I am going to try and compile a list to every anime I’ve seen that has a slash pairing in it. Some of the pairings are to my taste and may not be the same characters you slash, some are my OTP’s and some are total guilty pleasure pairings. I have watched a lot of Yaoi, shonen ai and slashy series so want to help others find all the gems out there and have a wealth of fanfiction, doujinshi and good shows to watch. I think I’ll trying naming all the anime with boys love in it and then go back and put in all my pairings, first I’ll list the yaoi and shonen ai anime’s then the ones that are just slashable. So here goes my ultimate Boy Love anime list!!!

Slashable Anime

1. Angel Sanctuary – Kira/Setsuna , Rosiel/Katan
01
2. Card Captor Sakura – Touya/Yuki, Touya/Yue
Ah CCS Clamp’s little magical girl series that is so good. You all know I love Clamp though I prefer the dark stuff but CCS is brilliant. Cardcaptor Sakura begins when ten-year-old fourth grader Sakura Kinomoto accidentally releases a set of magical cards called Clow Cards from the Clow Book, created and named after half-English, half-Chinese sorcerer Clow Reed. Each card has its own personality and characteristics and can assume alternate forms when activated. The guardian Beast of the Seal Cerberus emerges from the book and tells her it is now her responsibility to retrieve the missing cards. As she finds each card, she battles its magical personification and defeats it to seal it away. Cerberus acts as her guide, while her best friend and cousin Tomoyo Daidouji films her exploits and provides her with battle costumes. Sakura’s older brother Touya Kinomoto watches over her, while pretending that he is unaware of what is going on.

9. Bleach – Renji/Ishida, Ikkaku/Yumichiak

God I love this show so much so that I have hollow ichigo’s mask tattooed on my back. Ichigo Kurosaki is a teenager gifted with the ability to see spirits. His life is drastically changed by the sudden appearance of a Soul Reaper —one who governs the flow of souls between the human world and the afterlife—named Rukia Kuchiki, who arrives in search of a Hollow, a dangerous lost soul. When Rukia is severely wounded defending Ichigo from the Hollow, she attempts to transfer half of her reiatsuenergy to Ichigo so that he can defeat the Hollow. However, Ichigo takes almost all of her energy, transforming into a Soul Reaper and allowing him to defeat the Hollow with ease. With her powers diminished, Rukia is left stranded in the human world until she can recover her strength. In the meantime, Ichigo must take over Rukia’s role as a Soul Reaper, battling Hollows and guiding souls to the afterlife realm known as the Soul Society. The story follows Ichigo as well as his human friends that develop strange powers and their battles. Also thrown into the mix are the other members of soul society other shinigamis and all their conflicts, conspiracies, ambitions and corruption. I love shinigami lore so anything based on this is a must for me but this series is also just brilliant all the powers and weapons you could ever wish for plus some of the best battles I have ever seen in anime history. I really don’t know where to begin there are great character designs and from a series that’s now over 200 eps you know there’s gonna be loads of great characters, wonderful back stories, complications and contradictions, fights to the death and omg how brilliant are these fights. Every time I think they can’t get better a character levels up, unlocks a new ability, evolves their weapon or just loses the plot. Ichigo is a great protagonist and I don’t normally like the leads as they are a bit too honest and pure but he has such a great stubborn and arrogant streak. I love how flawed these characters are and how grey some of the show is not so black and white in terms of who is good or bad or what is best for humanity and the spirit world. It is very epic as you would guess from a 200 plus series but it’s very addictive watching.

10. DN Angel – Daisake/Satoshi
10
11. Fushigi Yuugi – Hotohori/Nuriko
the first ever fantasy bishonen harem based anime I ever watched and still one of the best. In all the years since I’ve watched this no other series has had the depth of character, beautiful bishonen and amazing story telling. I watched all 42 episodes in one go as I was so obsessed with this series. The plot centres on Middle-school student Miaka Yūki is under a lot of pressure to pass the entrance exam for the competitive Jonan Academy. Her friends do not believe she will get in, but she is determined to because her best friend, Yui Hongo, has applied for the same school and she wants them both to go to the school together. While at the library one day, Miaka and Yui encounter a strange book known as The Universe of the Four Gods. As a result of reading this book, they are then transported into the novel’s universe. However, Yui is transported back to the real world almost immediately. Inside the novel Miaka discovers that she is the Priestess of Suzaku and destined to gather the seven Celestial Warriors of the god Suzaku in order to summon Suzaku and obtain three wishes. She falls in love with the Celestial Warrior Tamahome, who eventually reciprocates and Miaka’s desire to use a wish to enter the high school of her choice begins to shift towards finding a way to be with Tamahome. Yui, who is also drawn into the book when she was trying to help Miaka to come back to the real world, becomes the Priestess of Seiryuu, working against Miaka out of jealousy over Tamahome and revenge for the humiliation and pain she had suffered when she first came to the book world. The series describes the various trials that teenagers Miaka and Yui face, both quest-driven and personal. Feeling betrayed, the two oppose one another as priestesses, bringing together their own respective warriors and vying for the chance to be granted three wishes by the gods whom they hope to summon.

13. Digimon – Tai/Matt, Daisuke/Kensuke, Takuya/Koji, Koji/Koichi
13
14. Durarara – Shizuo/Izaya

The plot follows Mikado Ryūgamine is a young man who longs for the exciting life of the big city. At the invitation of his childhood friend Kida Masaomi, he transfers to a school in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. Masaomi warns him about people he doesn’t want to cross in the city: a violent man dressed like a bartender, an information merchant, and a mysterious gang called “Dollars.” And to top it off, Mikado witnesses an urban legend on his first day in the city: the “Black Rider,” the supposedly headless driver of a black motorcycle. The narrative follows all of the characters equally, showing how their lives intersect, creating a greater plotline from what each character knows about a common incident.

17. Gankutsuo – Count/Albert, Albert/Franz
17
18. Getbackers – Juubei/Kazuki, Ban/Ginji,
this has to one of the best action anime’s out there, you soon work out that my fav shonen anime’s are all based on people with powers and weird weapons fighting each other. There’s normally no explanation to why these people have super powers and weird abilities or strange weapons but boy is it fun to watch them fight each other. Getbackers get the prize for the best because I love the character designs. I mean there are loads of interesting characters with wonderful abilities Dr jackal is one of my fav’s, he’s neither good nor bad but more on the dark side I mean he seems to manipulate knives that live in his blood and has no problem for violence.

22. Hitman Reborn – Spanner/Shoichi, Dino/Hibari
22
23. HunterxHunter – Leorio/Kuraprika
ah the series that naruto clearly ripped off since its older and in my opinion so much better. Twelve years prior to the start of the story, Ging Freecss left his infant son, Gon, with Gon’s aunt Mito on Whale Island. Gon, raised believing both his parents were dead, finds out from Ging’s apprentice, Kite, that his father is still alive and has since become an accomplished “Hunter”. Hunters are licensed, elite members of humanity who are capable of tracking down secret treasure, rare beasts, or even other individuals. Gon leaves his home to follow in his father’s footsteps as a Hunter by taking the “Hunter Examination”, a series of brutal tests involving skill, survival, and teamwork. Prior to and during the exam, Gon meets and befriends three of the other applicants: Kurapika, the last remaining member of the Kurta clan who wishes to become a Hunter in order to avenge his slain people; Leorio, a prospective physician who claims to desire to become rich; and Killua Zoldyck, who fled his life as a member of a notorious assassin family. These 4 enter the hunter exams together and the story follows their trials to become hunters and then their duties as hunters. The series is great because like so many battle based series they don’t spend 3 eps on one fight they get down to it in one ep making battles intense and harsh. The series doesn’t waste too much time on fillers and works to tell the story as we learn more about the past of these characters. The anime finished before the manga so again you have to read the manga to know what happens next but it does complete each story arc bringing you closer to the characters and the past and futures they face.

49. Yu yu Hakasho – Kurama/Hiei

another great tournament based battle anime from the same team that brought me HunterxHunter, both manga’s are by the same person so of course both are brilliant. YuYu Hakusho follows Yusuke Urameshi, a street-brawling delinquent who, in an uncharacteristic act of altruism, is hit by a car and killed in an attempt to save a young boy by pushing him out of the way. His ghost is greeted by Botan, a woman who introduces herself as the pilot of the River Styx, who ferries souls to the “Underworld” where they may be judged for the afterlife. Botan informs Yusuke that his act had caught even the Underworld by surprise and that there was not yet a place made for him in either heaven or hell. Thus Koenma, son of the Underworld’s ruler King Enma, offers Yusuke a chance to return to his body through a series of tests. Yusuke succeeds with the help of his friend Keiko. After returning to life, Koenma grants Yusuke the title of “Underworld Detective”, charging him with investigating supernatural activity within the human world. Soon Yusuke is off on his first case, retrieving three treasures stolen from the Underworld by a gang of demons: Hiei, Kurama and Goki. Yusuke collects the three treasures with the aid of his new technique, the “Rei Gun”, a shot of aura energy fired mentally from his index finger. The series itself is based around 3 huge tournament themed arcs and is very focused on the battles. It can take a few episodes for each fight and does have the very clichéd fight battle. Hero starts winning a bit, gets cocky, badie shows true strength, hero gets knocked back, badie reveals why he is in this fight and a bit of back story before trying to beat hero, hero finds new hidden strength and makes a comeback defeating bad guy. Every character gets their fair share of wins and losses and it’s always exciting to see what happens. I love the intense battles the interrelationships between the competitors and the fact that sometimes things aren’t black and white and friends and enemies aren’t set in stone or easy to judge too quickly.

59. Tsuritama – Yamada/Natsuki, yuki/Haru
The plot for Tsuritama starts simple before it goes off on its own colourful alien themed tangent. Yuki Sanada is a high school student who lives with his grandmother, a woman whose career requires frequent relocation which prevents the boy from establishing any real friendships, much less the social skills necessary to initiate them. Whenever he becomes anxious, he freezes in place, unable to breathe, and feels like he is drowning. Donning a markedly demonic expression—so potent with seemingly latent rage that others become wary of him at its appearance. Shortly after arriving at their home on the grandmother’s most recently sanctioned work base, the island of Enoshima, a zealous transfer student named Haru—wielding a water gun and sporting a fish bowl atop his head—appears on their doorstep claiming to be an alien and that he will henceforth be living in the same house; the grandmother agrees to allow such if Haru simply meets one condition (which is undisclosed to the audience). Haru’s presence continually makes Yuki uncomfortable. The two also meet a secluded young fisher, Natsuki Usami, nicknamed “The Fishing Prince”. An Indian man named Akira watches Haru from a distance with his duck Tapioca.

75. Deadman Wonderland – Genkaku/Nagi, Senji/Toto
It’s been a while since I’ve seen an anime this good and if you haven’t heard or seen of this then the pun in my tittle is perfect for this series. At only 13 eps I watched it in one setting which was easy to do as it was so engaging. It’s like a really messed up psychotic version of Alice in Wonderland but completely twisting the classic fairy tale to a violent and dangerous nightmare version.
The plot for Deadman is that a massive earthquake ravaged Japan’s mainland and destroyed most of Tokyo, sinking three-quarters of it into the ocean. Ten years later, the story shifts to Igarashi Ganta, a seemingly ordinary student attending Nagano Prefecture’s middle school. An escapee, a survivor of the great earthquake, Ganta has no memories of the tragedy and has lived a normal life. This all changes when a strange person covered in blood and crimson armour floats through his classroom windows. Grinning madly, the Red Man massacres Ganta’s entire class but instead of killing him, embeds a red crystal shard in Ganta’s chest. Within days of the massacre, Ganta is declared the sole suspect and, following a quick trial, is sentenced to life imprisonment in Deadman Wonderland, a massive theme park like prison. Arriving at the prison, Ganta is fitted with a special collar which monitors his location and life signs. Due to the heinous nature of Ganta’s ‘crime’, he has to live out his imprisonment under Deadman Wonderland’s ‘Death Sentence’.

Ok so yes this is an anime that I started watching because of the fan girl in me. Of course I wasn’t going to let it go unwatched there’s an entire cast of hot bishies one side is military (yay uniforms) the other is the church (yay flouncy robes). I have to say I loved this series it was everything it needed to be, the men were hot, the action great, the story interesting, the scoring was good, the world was interesting and the slash was abundant.

Train Heartnett, code named Black Cat is the thirteenth member in an organization known as Cronos. Cronos are an elite group of “erasers”, professional assassins that are sent in to assassinate targets they deem too dangerous or too corrupt to be dealt with in any other manner. But Train learns a valuable lesson in human compassion from young “sweeper”, professional bounty hunters, Saya Minatsuki. He learns there is more to life than being the cold hearted killer he has become and soon yearns for a life of freedom where he can make his own choices and follow his own path. He leaves Cronos and his path crosses that of Sweeper Sven Volfied. They cross paths while investigating a bio-weapon that turns out to be a genetically created girl named Eve. After Train decides not to kill her Sven takes her in as well as Train. They form a small “unconventional” family unit and group of Sweepers living their lives free and as they choose.
Unfortunately their lives are disrupted by the appearance of Train’s x-partner Creed Diskence from Cronos who himself has left the organization but to pursue more sinister and destructive goals. Creed is determined to see Train return to his cold hearted nature and help him and his newly formed group of villains cause havoc in the world. Train must learn what his true nature is and where he really belongs in this world he has chosen to live freely in.

94. Togainu no Chi – Akira/Keisuke (shame the anime wasn’t full yaoi like the game)
When I found out they had made an anime to Togainu no chi I was over the moon, couldn’t wait to watch it, bouncing off the walls. It’s based on a BL game and while I haven’t played the game because I have no idea how to get an English patch for a Japanese game I do have all the SG’s (screen grabs). This means I know all the characters and all the possible pairings and endings. It’s one violent and explicit yaoi game so I was very looking forward to watching it play out in anime. While the characters still look great and have good voice actors for them the rest of the anime was a bit of a let-down. The basic story is that Akira, the number one street fighter, is framed for a murder he didn’t commit. While his sentencing is being completed he is visited by a mysterious woman who gives him the option of rooting in prison or taking up a tag going to a district called Toshima and participating in the Igra game. Toshima is a violent and deadly district sealed off from the normal world that has its own set of rules. Igra is a game in which you collect tags from opponents, the tags are similar to cards and you have to try and get a royal flush so that you can challenge ll Re and gain the position of drug lord. Everyone is given 5 random tags and you basically have to fight people for them in the hope you opponent has a tag that will get you closer to making it to a royal flush. This leads to violent battles and a lot of bloodshed and death. Add to the mix a drug called Line that gives you super strength while turning you mad you get a great gritty and harsh environment. So far so good was nice knowing the plot behind the game and images I’d collected from it and it was a world and plot that appeals to my violent aesthetic.

I have just finished watching the new series of FMA and what can I say truly amazing I loved it I really didn’t want it to end. Now I loved the original series I thought it was great and was in love with the character Roy Mustang. The basic plot is that of 2 brothers whose mother dies so they break the biggest taboo in their world, Human transmutation. Basically set in a world that is a cross between early 20th century Europe mixed with Alchemy, this is not magic this is the more scientific and practical implication of magic the true art know as Alchemy, there are some that know Alchemy. These two brothers after the loss of their mother decide to use Alchemy to bring her back from the dead. Alchemy works by equivalent exchange you need to give something of equal value to get something back, i.e. turning a lump of mud into a rock statue. So the brothers collect all the things that make up a human body and try to transmute it back into their mother. Unfortunately human transmutation isn’t as cut and dry as normal alchemy and in the process of trying to recreate their mother Al loses his body and Ed loses his arm. Making it worse the thing that is created is such a twisted and unrecognizable thing that it soon dies and is nothing like their mother. Ed in a fit of desperation affixes his brother soul to a suit of armour as to not lose him altogether and in the process sacrifices his leg as toll for the alchemy to save his brothers soul. After this event they are visited by Colonel Roy Mustang hearing about two very young but talented alchemists that he wants to recruit them. After what he sees of them he gives them a choice, wallow in the horrific fate they have dealt to themselves or move forward. Ed decided to take up the colonel’s words he becomes a State Alchemist working for the military. State Alchemists see themselves as the dogs of the military being bound to be used as human weapons whenever their skills are required but in exchange they are highly paid and have high positions meaning access to research and policies above the regular army. Ed becomes a state alchemist in order to find a way to get his and Al’s body back. Ed has auto mails, a mechanical limp, to replace his missing arm and leg and thus is named the Full Metal Alchemist. All state alchemists are given a name according to their ability; Roy is the Flame alchemist because of his expert and deadly use of flame alchemy.

108. Kurogane no linebarrels – Reiji/Satoru
The plot centers around Hayase Kouichi (and it may have something to do with how annoying this boy is that made me want to throw a book at the screen), he’s a bit of a loser, the class go body that gets picked on but he dreams of being a hero of justice. Hayase is always getting saved and protected by his much more attractive and cooler best mate but Hayase doesn’t seem very grateful about this as he feels it’s unfair to always have his mate come to his rescue. As with all those that seek power his lucky or unlucky break comes when a giant robot falls from space crushing him to death. Well through the laws of anime magic and unexplained plot twists the robot saves his life and makes Hayase his pilot. Hayase is overjoyed, he now has power, can stand up for himself and a giant robot. Also with giant robot comes a large breasted girl with amnesia and Hayase vows to protect. So when other robots come to destroy his home a Hero of Justice is born. Unfortunately Hayase is an arrogant sod who flashes his power like a school bully, wont listen or show any respect for the friends that have helped and stood by him since childhood and thinks his new buxom friend should just stand around and be protected. No wonder all the other characters hate him I was waiting for someone to kick the crap out of him. Luckily this came when good guy and his robot from the secret organisation trying to save the world, in fact beat the crap out of Hayase for being an egotistical overconfident pain in the arse. Unfortunately it’s not until death of the only character with any sense that Hayase realises he’s being a pratt.

109. Himitsu: Top Secret Revelation - Aoki/Maki
I seem to be quite good at finding little anime’s that not many people have watched but really should. This series I found happens to be excellent though very little info is on the web about it. The story takes place five decades from now, when brain scanners have been perfected to the point that the government can retrieve up to five years’ worth of memories from people’s minds — even if they are dead. The investigators of the National Research Institute of Police Science’s 9th Forensics Laboratory must weigh the ethical choices in the ultimate invasion of privacy as they delve into people’s minds to solve crimes. The show is a psychological version of something like CSI but with more weight and a far more disturbing turn. We have an elite police unit that focuses on trying to solve the crimes that would remain a mystery if it wasn’t for this fantastic new technology that is able to look into the memoires of the victims. The catch is the brain must be removed from the dead victim before a 48hr period to ensure that the memories are intact. With storylines such as political assassinations, brutal killings and deranged serial murderers there is much for fans of hard core police and crime dramas to enjoy. For me personally I prefer a little more dark side crime series so this was perfect. I have always loved mystery amine’s such as Detective Academy Q but this is a nice step away from series aimed at a younger audience into a far more adult show. The show itself is pictured more realistically, with character designs and settings looking much how you would find them in the real world. This immediately gives you a more realistic setting rather than the usual fantasy and escapist image of many anime’s. Also it gives you a little insight to the problems of the modern world the nature of escalating crime, humanities passion for more perverse violence and the changes in our culture and society that brings about new waves of crime. For example one story involves the nature of body modification and the new youth culture that has gone beyond tattoo’s and piecing as a way to express themselves and are finding more extreme ways to change their bodies and express their individuality.

Cinderella – A twisted tale of motherly love.

The title of this Korean horror doesn’t quite match up with the story as it’s less about a step mum abusing her daughter but more about how her love makes her lose her grip on sanity and the true meaning of being a parent. On the surface this is another stylish horror film from Korea that is well made and filmed beautifully. It does have some very scary moments and a very creepy atmosphere but it treads a thin line between being creepy and being silly.

331993

I have and will probably always be afraid of the archetype of Asian horror, the woman with the long black hair. Ever since Sadako crawled out of her well and through the television set I have hated that image. It is an image that hasn’t sat well with me I don’t like it, its unnatural and sinister in a way that western horror hasn’t been able to capture. Maybe because it is a very foreign image after all I’m a western woman in a western world not in Asia. But I also lived in Korea and strangely that didn’t take the sting out of the image, no matter where, a woman with long black hair crawling towards me is very unsettling.

In Cinderella it is done very well through the eyes of a girl on the operating table who is between wakefulness and unconsciousness. Is it a true vision of a ghost crawling towards her or is it a cocktail of drugs making her hallucinate? If you’ve ever had an operation then you know that anaesthetics and pain killers can cause mild hallucinations and the lines of reality can blur. So this already sets up a nice scene, helpless and losing consciousness about to be operated on and unseen to the surgeons and doctors in the room a disjointed dead like woman is crawling under your operating bed and the last thing you see is her reflection in your eyeball.

It became apparent that this young girl is being haunted as the ghost seems to possess those who have had plastic surgery. Young girl’s mother is a skilled plastic surgeon and is obsessed with beauty and making sure her daughter has everything she desires including perfect looks. This seems to also mean that if daughter’s friends want plastic surgery to improve their looks then she will also indulge their whims and operate on them. The downside is that whoever gets operated on is possessed and is driven mad by the whisperings of the ghost. A ghost who believes her face was stolen and wants it back convincing its victims they have stolen her beauty and eventually in madness disfigures themselves.

cinderellasilly
The film gets a little close to silly as two friends who had nose jobs get possessed at the same time and in a surreal moment sit telling each other how pretty they are while slicing at each other’s faces completely taken over by their madness. But the rest of the time it stays suitable creepy with stillness and solemn music. Long walks down corridors and a mystery being pieced together in flashback makes for an intriguing plot and a good atmosphere and soon you are invested in the storyline and why this ghost is out to seek revenge.
KQk1YhBeuu7ILiz

So here is where the plot gets interesting and we get a story of motherly love and whether flesh and blood means more. What does it truly mean to be a mother and how far you will go to prove you love your child? As the mystery is pieced together it doesn’t take long to work out what is behind this plot. A mother has a child who was disfigured in an accident and somehow steals away an abandoned child. While flesh and blood lies dying needed a face transplant new daughter is raised in the basement not allowed to see the light of day and not allowed to be discovered. Mothers love for her biological daughter is so strong that she operates and transplants their faces allowing biological daughter to live a full and happy life while adopted daughter is left to live in the basement. Mother all poised to kill the unneeded child has a change of heart, she has grown used to speaking, playing and raising this other child who loves her and the love is returned. Unable to kill her adopted child she raises her in secrete. Now it seems that biological daughter knows nothing of her sister that she stole a face from and grows up wanting for nothing into a bit of a spoilt brat really. She is egotistical and selfish and doesn’t really seem to appreciate the life her mother built for her. Instead mother has bonded more with her secret disfigured daughter who is far more appreciative and warm and caring even if she doesn’t really know much better having been raised in the cellar.

The movie raises the usual questions of the meaning of beauty and privilege, those that have everything can be ugly people but those not blessed can be far more caring and compassionate. Also sometimes unconditional love isn’t reserved just for those related by blood you can still love a child every bit as much as a flesh and blood daughter. While trying to save one daughter Mother ended up having a more meaningful relationship with a child not related to her one that far more appreciated her. But alas adopted child grew up and learnt about jealousy, wanting to know why she could never come out to play with her sister. She grew to hate her sister for being able to have a life, friends, mother’s undivided attention and a beautiful face. It all got too much and she commits suicide and in her anger and hurt a ghost of revenge seeking her true face is born. Now we know who and why one mums very bad parenting skills breeds contempt, jealousy and anger all the ingredient of a vengeful ghost and the only outcome is for a mother to work out where her love and compassion should truly lie, which of her daughters really needs her the living or the dead.
poster_image_1197_3_1

What makes this movie a little more interesting and brave is the fact that it uses the theme of plastic surgery. Many of the Asian horrors are now using modern situations and technology as the instruments of horror. Cursed video and phones are now prominent, modern family units are the victims and social and cultural changes are being brought to our attention. It is a known fact that the Koreans are obsessed with plastic surgery; I lived there for a year and witnessed this. Parents would take their children as young as 10 to a plastic surgeon to have all moles and freckles removed as they are seen as blemishes on the skin. Korean women strive for perfect, flawless skin, bigger eyes and cuter noses are all the fashion. Women are under a lot of pressure to look perfect or they won’t get husbands and succeed in life and it’s a cultural phenomenon that hasn’t really been addressed. We as westerners can see it for ourselves when out there; I had at least 1 in 10 children who had had plastic surgery during the time I was teaching. What is rare is that a Korean film has commented on this has made a stand to say that this is happening in Korean society. Horror has always been unique in taking modern fears and social irregularities and exposing them in terrifying ways. Cinderella not only exposes the fear of an atypical family unit (a single mum) but also plastic surgery and how it can change the way you perceive yourself.

I enjoyed this movie for its creepy factor but also because it wasn’t afraid to do something different and try to expose a real Korean problem that hasn’t seen that much media attention or truly been exposed yet. This is the beauty of horror social problem versus the underlying fears.

One Girl’s Otaku Tattoo Quest

An interview I did for Minami Con.
Hi my name is Sarah aka Aqua. I have been an anime enthusiast for many years and have seen lots of different ways people have expressed their love for the fandom, from decorating cars to rooms dedicated to manga libraries. One of these people is a close personal friend of mine and her way of expressing her fandom is though the art of tattooing. She lived in Asia, getting most of her tattoos done in South Korea and Japan. I’m here now to interview Zoe about her tattoos and the experiences she’s had getting them.
Aqua: What was your first tattoo?
LZSY: My first tattoo was a rose I got on my back while I was in Ibiza, basically based on the fact I was in love with a series called Rose of Versailles.
tattoo1

Aqua: What other tattoos do you have now?
LZSY: I have a quarter sleeve on my right hand side which I had done while in South Korea and I have another quarter sleeve on my left side which I had done in Osaka in Japan. I also have tear drops on my shoulders, butterflies on my clavicle and the xXxHoLic symbol on my wrist.

Aqua: They look amazing and so elaborate. I see they are all based around anime however are not characters, can you explain the tattoos on your right quarter sleeve?
LZSY: My sleeves are compositions of different iconographies from different fandoms patch worked together taking particular styles, themes and artworks and putting them into butterfly themes.
The first one I got is Hollow Ichigo’s mask but it is done in a certain way that it is surrounded by smoke in the motif of a butterfly.
tattoo2

LZSY: I have also got Lelouch-sama’s mask from one of the clamp art books as the mask itself looked like a butterfly. I took the butterfly design with Lelouch’s Geass eye and some more designed smoke.
tattoo4

Another favourite artist is Yuki Kaori. I took one of her iconic covers, which is a cross; I think Michael is posing with it, which has butterflies hammed to it.
tattoo3

The next tattoo is another butterfly, again from bleach with a moon design. The Sakura petals are specifically the Sakura petals used by Seishirō from the Tokyo Babylon manga and the butterflies on my chest at are the Tyki Mikk’s butterflys from D’gray Man.
tattoo5
tattoo6

I have also got the word “Shinigami” as I am a huge fan of the Shinigami lore and it’s tied to butterflies as they are the messengers. Shinigami lore is one of my favourite themes within animes hence why I like bleach so much.
tattoo9

Aqua: What about your left sleeve, it looks awesome but a little less complicated.
LZSY: On my left hand side I have a giant tattoo all completely depicted my love of death note.
tattoo7

Aqua: I see that your designs are not characters from animes and mangas but have been composed in a certain way to show your love for the fandoms, where are the design from?
LZSY: They are all pretty much designed by myself and pieced together. When I have not designed them I have taken them straight out of the manga’s and have chosen the compositions to put them together in such a way.

Aqua: Your xXxHoLic tattoo, why did you decide to get that one?
LZSY: Oh yeah, the tattoo on my wrist is the 3 X’s from xXxHoLic in exactly the same style which represents not only the anime fandom but the 3 X’s for my universal fandoms, X|1999, X-Files and X-Men, it looks gorgeous.
tattoo8

Aqua: Is there a reason why all your tattoos are all black and white with no colour?
LZSY: I will not put colour in my tattoos because you do not put colour in manga. Even before tattooing I was a great believer that your body is a canvas so I got a lot of piercings. However there wasn’t many piercings I wanted to get and I like artwork so much that I thought, you know what, skin is another place you can put artwork so I decided to turn my body into pages of manga representing that beautiful art style on my skin.
tattoo10

Aqua: Will you not one day ask yourself “Why have I got these tattooed to myself, permanently”?
LZSY: I have always said that there are two kinds of people when it comes to tattooing. People that will not get a tattoo or keeping thinking about getting a tattoo but think “it will be on me forever” and people who the thought “it will be on me forever” doesn’t even cross their minds. The fact that these are going to be on my body forever never crosses my mind.
What goes through my head is that there is a patch of skin I think I can artistically enhance through expressing a love of a fandom. Even as my fandom changes, which they do, I still love them because great art never goes out of fashion. People don’t look at Picasso and think “I am over that now”, and the fact that I have it on my body makes no difference to me and I don’t think I will ever tire of looking at them. It is beautiful and very important to me.

Aqua: You have such passion for your tattoos; do you have any more planned?
LZSY: Of course!! I can’t wait to get my entire back done, it has taken my 2 years to plan this tattoo and even then I am like, “I can just add something else to that…” or “Oh! A new fandom”. Recently there has been other fandoms, I was doing well with my design until I saw Kuro and I was like yes, I must have that somewhere in the iconography of my tattoos. I had to reshuffle a bit. That is the only downside of turning your body into the pages of manga. I always get nervous when a new Clamp comes out, I know that there is going to be something in it I want to add.
My tattoos are based around Clamp, and this is going to be in my other designs as well as, magic summoning circles from various things like Tsubasa and the demon contract symbol from KuroShitsuji .
I have a rule with myself that I have to be into the fandom for at least a year before I can even think about putting it on my body because then I know I have loved it and will still be thinking about it. I have been planning my back piece for 3 years now and the central image has not change one bit.

Aqua: So… let’s talk about your experiences, what was it like getting your tattoos done in South Korea?
LZSY: I lived in South Korea before I went to Japan so I started getting tattoos while I was there. In Korea it is illegal and you have to have a practicing medical licence and be a registered doctor to be able to change somebodies body and so obviously tattoo artists are not doctors. Tattooing is kind of like this weird underground hidden art form. As many of you know Koreans produce some amazing manga now and most of the anime you watch now, when the credits roll up, you will see Korean artists. I knew the calibre of artistry in Korea would be just as impressive. It is a little bit more of a Ninja process in Korea as you have to try and find a secret tattoo den. The parlour I went to was a high class establishment and all the artists had dual American passports so if they ever get caught they could always turn around and say “I am American and therefore I can tattoo”. You can tell by looking at the tattoo artwork on my arm just how amazing they are, I would literally turned up with pages of manga and drawings and say can you combines these and out it on my body.

Aqua: That sounds like an experience and a half, what about Japan, how did that compare?
LZSY: Although the Koreans were amazing, in Japan it was so nice to have tattooing as more of an open thing, less like being a Ninja. My Japanese tattoo has a crazy story. I was out in Osaka, I knew I wanted a tattoo done I just didn’t know where or when I was going to get it. I was trying to find a more alternate place to go drinking than your usual hip hop bars when I saw a place called the “Black Star Tattoo Bar” and I was like “is it a bar? Is it a tattoo parlour? I don’t really know”. I trundled up the stairs and basically by day it’s a tattoo parlour and in the evening the staff pack up their equipment and have a bar which they open for business so you can drink with them. I had some drinks with them and started talking to one of the artists. At 2 o’clock in the morning they called another tattoo artist down and said this girl wants a tattoo. I literally sat at the bar after a couple of pints describing this Death Note tattoo that I really wanted and he said come back tomorrow and we’ll do it. I came back the next day and 3 hours later a beautiful Death Note tattoo appeared on my arm. It hurt like hell and bleed, bleed like you would not believe. Never drink beer before having a tattoo it thins the blood and you bleed everywhere.
tattoo11

Aqua: Oh my goodness!! How long did it take for you to have all your tattoos done?
LZSY: Let me think… there must be at least 20 hours of work on my body. Some of the more excruciating pains and some of strangest feeling ever, but nothing compares to the scariness of seeing that shading brush coming at you. That is 4 needles in a wedge that they used to shade tattoos. Once you have had a tattoo done the adrenalin rush and the absolute exquisiteness of it all, you are ready for your next one. The fact that it has been 2 years since my last tattoo I am in withdrawal. It’s taking forever to plan new ones and I have to be careful now I am back in the UK and trying to find the right tattoo parlour that has an Asian style of art. The standard I am used to is high.

Since the writting of this article I have found an amazing tattooist Edgar at Old London Road tattoo Studio. http://www.oldlondonroad.co.uk/
I now have finally completed my back piece of Yuko from xXxholic/tsubasa magic summoning circle.
DSCF2371

Aqua: Ok last but not least, do you have any advice for people out there?
LZSY: My advice to anyone who wants to get an anime related tattoo is make sure it’s a fandom that you have loved for a while. I have loved Clamp since I got into anime so by the time I was old enough to have a tattoo I knew exactly what I wanted. It was just a case of piecing it together and you just know in your heart that is what you want. Everyone is different some people like putting characters on their body I am not like that because I come from a slightly different background where the iconography and the meaning and stories behind it are more important to me. Do not jump into it if you are not ready or are not sure, it’s something that will be with you forever.

Tsuritama – Friendship, fishing and Aliens.

Tsuritama_full_1073340

I loved this little series it was a great feel good nice little anime that made me laugh, cry, cheer up and then I got to go find fan fiction as it also had slashiness to it. It’s a very bright up beat series and while I tend to enjoy the darker more gritty anime’s or the ones that are surreal or violent sometimes it’s nice to watch a series that is uplifting and cheerful. The animation itself is bright and colourful rather refreshing not afraid to be different and uses a variety of colours and textures. The character designs are cute and the guys are not bad to look at, my favourite being moody teen with a good heart Natsuki. You’ve got to love happy go lucky alien Haru and his free spirited fun attitude, not quite understanding humanity but trying to while trying to work out his emotion without ever being emo.
[HorribleSubs] Tsuritama - 04 [720p]_mkv_snapshot_06_33_[2012_05_03_13_49_31][2]

The series does remind me of Ghibli’s Ponyo, not only the magical feel, bright animation style and cute characters but the very fact that it’s about fish. Like Ponyo’s little mermaid retelling this time our mermaid is a merboy alien. Haru comes to earth and chooses Yuki to be his friend and companion trusting him with his feelings and mission. Throw into the group the on the surface anti-social scruffy moody Natsuki with his family angst and shying away from his dreams and we have 3 interesting boys working through their issues and finding friendship. They bond over fishing an activity that has far more to do with the plot then you would think and as 3 isolated characters keeping themselves apart they learn to be friends to understand each other and support each other.

Whats nice about this series is that they don’t totally angst out, there’s a touch of humour to their dilemma’s It never gets to heavy and they learn to smile with each other. Yuki has never had friends and clearly never spoke up for himself or knew how to interact and it’s an alien with no real idea of human etiquette and personal boundaries that brings the 3 of them together. It’s a sweet message that everyone has issues but sometimes you need to be open to understand others before you can see your own problems properly and find true friends.

The last character to join the 3 is Indian Yamada and his pet duck Tapioca. He is secretly working for a government agency tracking down and eliminating alien threats. Of course by the end of the series he has been one over by Haru’s sincerity and Yuki and Natsuki’s passions and determination. It helps that Yamada is also a huge fishing fan and begins to bond with the boys through this mutual act until he is part of the gang and realises having friends and a true cause to fight for is far more important than government missions and following protocol. Its Yamada’s secret organisation that also creates some of the more random elements, they call themselves Duck, have a signature stance and seem to wear waterproof bunny outfits to fight the true alien menace.

The series doesn’t take itself too seriously it’s fun and with wacky going on like a lost alien turning the people into dancing zombies, you can’t blame it for keeping the tone comedic. But even though it’s funny it is touching, I did cry I felt for these characters not just the main ones but the secondary ones as well. So much of television gives us suffering and torture for entertainment we become numb. But to see a simple story about friends having fun and moving forward together is warming. Sometimes tearing up over something happy helps you realise that seeing good and warmth between people is entertaining and real .

By the end of the series I was happily slashing Yuki/Haru and Yamada/Natsuki. You can’t make a series about 4 pretty boys bonding and saving the world together without expecting my yaoi goggles to come out. I did really love this series is was fun and feel good and had more heart than a lot of shows I’ve watched recently. Anime sometimes get too complicated and it’s nice just to see from the heart story telling.
